Honed cylinder tubes for hydraulic applications

Cylinder tubes are an essential component in hydraulic systems and are defined by their precise inside finish and tight tolerances. At JB Tubes we supply honed cylinder tubes, skived and roller burnished tubes and cold drawn cylinder tubes in a wide range of sizes for the maritime sector, general industry and offshore projects.

Standards and types of cylinder tube

There are several types of hydraulic cylinder tube on the market, each with its own specification and field of application. The most common are cylinder tubes to:

• EN 10305-1/-2 (cold drawn precision tubes)
• EN 10210-1/-2 (hot finished tubes)
• EN 10297-1 (seamless tubes for mechanical engineering)
• EN 10216-3 (seamless tubes for pressure purposes)

These tubes are honed, roller burnished or drawn on the inside to a tolerance of H8 to H11 on the inside diameter, depending on the size (usually H8 or H9), and are used mainly in hydraulic cylinders.

Seamless or welded cold drawn cylinder tubes

Our seamless or welded cold drawn cylinder tubes are available in:

• E355+SR (St. 52.0) to EN 10305-1/-2: honed or skived and roller burnished, inside diameter 20 mm to 250 mm, inside tolerance H8 to H11 depending on the size (mostly H8/H9), Ra max. 0.4 µm
• E355+C to EN 10305-2 (DIN 2393 St52.3 BK), welded and cold drawn, also known as D.O.M.: inside diameter 12 mm to 110 mm, inside tolerance H9 to H10

These tubes are used wherever a high degree of precision and dimensional accuracy is required, as in hydraulics.

Thick-walled seamless hot rolled cylinder tubes

For applications that require a heavier wall and greater strength, we supply thick-walled seamless hot rolled cylinder tubes in:

• E355+AR / S355J2H to EN 10210-1/-2
• E355K2N to EN 10297-1
• P355N to EN 10216-3

These grades are often triple certified. Our hot rolled cylinder tubes are bored and honed to H8, with inside diameters from 180 mm to 400 mm, and can be machined to any required inside diameter, subject to stock and raw material availability. They are impact tested to a minimum of 27 J at −20 °C.

The normalised grades (E355K2N and P355N) are well suited to use at lower ambient temperatures. They can also be upgraded under the supervision of classification societies such as Lloyd's Register, DNV-GL, ABS and Bureau Veritas, as we only source from suppliers that hold the required approvals.

Seamless stainless steel cylinder tubes

For corrosive environments we also supply seamless stainless steel cylinder tubes in AISI 304 (1.4301) and AISI 316L. They are honed or roller burnished to H9 to H11, with inside diameters from 25 mm to 160 mm, and are supplied with a 3.1 certificate.

Quality assurance: 3.1 certificate

Our cylinder tubes are supplied with a 3.1 certificate to EN 10204; a 3.2 certificate is available on request. It states the material grade, the applicable standard, heat and test numbers, mechanical properties and chemical composition, so you know exactly what you are getting.
