Steel hollow sections: square and rectangular tubes to EN 10210 and EN 10219

Steel hollow sections are a core component in construction and mechanical engineering, giving strength and stability to a wide variety of projects. EN 10210 and EN 10219: what is the difference?

EN 10210 and EN 10219 are European standards that set out the technical requirements for steel hollow sections. The main differences between them lie in the production method and the steel grades used.

  • EN 10210 covers hot finished structural hollow sections in carbon steel. These sections are mainly used in construction and mechanical engineering where high strength is required.
  • EN 10219 covers cold formed welded structural hollow sections in carbon steel. They suit applications that call for a good balance between strength and flexibility, such as lightweight structures and fencing.

Please note that both are carbon steel sections: they are not corrosion resistant in themselves. Where corrosion is a concern, the sections will need suitable surface protection.

Our range of steel hollow sections

We stock hollow sections to both EN 10210 and EN 10219 in several steel grades and a wide range of sizes. For both standards, sizes are given as external dimensions (width x height) plus wall thickness.

1. Seamless or welded to EN 10210 – S235JRH / S355J2H

These hot finished sections are available as square and rectangular tubes in the following sizes:

  • Square: from 40 x 40 mm up to 400 x 400 mm, with wall thicknesses up to 20 mm.
  • Rectangular: from 50 x 30 mm up to 500 x 300 mm, with wall thicknesses up to 20 mm.

The heavier wall thicknesses make EN 10210 sections a natural choice for load-bearing structures, frames and machine bases.

2. Welded to EN 10219 – S235JRH / S275J0H / S355J2H

Our cold formed sections are also available as square and rectangular tubes:

  • Square: from 40 x 40 mm up to 400 x 400 mm, with wall thicknesses up to 16 mm.
  • Rectangular: from 50 x 30 mm up to 500 x 300 mm, with wall thicknesses up to 16 mm.

With three steel grades to choose from, EN 10219 sections are a cost-effective option for lighter structures, supports and framework.

Quality you can trace: supplied with a 3.1 certificate

All our steel hollow sections are supplied with a 3.1 inspection certificate to EN 10204. This certificate is issued by the manufacturer and confirms that the sections have been produced to the required specifications and tested accordingly. It is signed by an authorised inspection representative who is independent of the manufacturer's production department, so you know exactly what you are working with.
